FLOW is a city-wide public art project that reveals how the ordinary activities of citizens affect the health and future of the White River water system. Designed by visual artist Mary Miss in collaboration with many civic, art, and education organizations in Indianapolis, FLOW uses physical installation, an audio guide and a web app to explore and reveal the city’s water systems.

The Operative HydroSensus (OHS) project is designed to establish a new relationship between urban residents and their public waters. The OHS is a floating platform that combines bio-mimicry components to improve water quality with sensory technology that measures improvement and broadcasts it on multiple channels. Through a framework of communication and education the OHS will create a way for users to ‘talk to the river’ – receiving immediate information and understanding the effects that changes in the built environment such as catchment basins and green roofs can have on the health of the urban ecosystem.
The HydroSensus project is developed in collaboration with Jenny Chen-Cheng Chou.

Temp:: has collaborated with Jenny Chou to submit a new and improved version of the floating-remediating-communicating pod to the Next Generation design competition organized by Metropolis Magazine.
The pod offers a new Water User Interface (WUI) for the urban environment, operating in two parallel landscapes – an event landscape and a virtual landscape.

With a New York City Parks Department permit, and the Weather Underground on our side (well, at least it didn’t rain), the first Eco-Pod Armada was finally launched into the East River!
Check out the pictures on the project page (video coming soon).

The pod prototype was taken to the Brooklyn Bridge Park for a first test-launch. The sun was shining, innocent bystanders seemed intrigued, and the pod finally met the water. And so did we.
The water was a bit wavy, and the rocks posed some challenges for our little boat.
So, back to the drawing board…
Wish us luck with the next (and public) launch, tentatively scheduled for Sunday, December 6th (pending Parks Department approval).
Save the date and cross your fingers for a sunny Sunday!

A fleet of aquatic phytoremediation interactive mobile pods is about to be launched
onto the East river. Each pod will be built of a remote-controlled speed boat, wooden rods, a fishing net, hydroponic plants and some duct tape.
This is all done with the amazing help of the Awesome Foundation in Boston.
